Spring time: New Growth for your Weight Loss Goals

Can you believe it is spring already?  Where does the time go?

MyGoal #006 illustration - Blue Sky (Clarity)This is the perfect season for rejuvenation and growth.  Not only is it a good time to check in and see how everything is going with your weight loss goals, it is also a great time to set the stage for your next phase of growth.

Before the year trudges on any further, let’s talk about re-committing to or rearranging current plans, since the majority of people who make New Year’s Resolutions do not achieve them.

Just like our muscles need to experience progressive overload in order to grow, we need to challenge ourselves to move beyond our current habits and practices in order to develop.  It’s not enough to just be comfortable.  This is where plateaus happen.

If what you’ve been doing has brought you to a place of stagnation, or worse feeling like you want to quit, let’s talk about what you can do to keep growing.  Since we usually discuss what you can do to be healthy and lose weight, let’s consider what not to do.  This is perfect if it feels like too much to just keep adding more and more to your to-do list.  Instead, let’s talk about what you can remove.

Sometimes we need to clear away an old habit before we can make room for a new one. Can you think of something in your life you’d like to release?  A way of eating or drinking, a thought pattern, or something not directly related to health and weight loss?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. MyGoal #006 illustration - SpringReduce the amount of daily pop consumption.  Perhaps you’d like to move from drinking 3 cans/day to 1 can/day.  This can eventually make room for more water and lighter fluids! OR replace 1 pop/day with 1 glass of water.
  2. Clear out a room in the house to create space for exercise, a new hobby, or a great place to relax at the end of the day.  Often, our environmental conditions mirror what’s going on inside of us, so clearing the clutter can actually help us clear out from the inside out too!
  3. Stop saying yes when you really want to say no.  This may not seem health related, but stay with me.  Just start to notice how often you commit to things you’d actually rather say no to.  Now notice how much time you’d free up in your life if you had the confidence to say no.  This one alone can free up so much energy and motivation to lose weight, because you’re finally saying yes to yourself!
  4. Stop eating as a means to cope with stress.  This one might seem like a tall order, but see if you can come up with alternatives to stress eating.  If you’re armed and ready ahead of time with ideas, you’ll be more likely to conquer it when the time comes.  Examples might be to call a friend instead of reaching for the chips, go for a drive, or step outside for 10 minutes to get some fresh air.

These are a few good ways to lose weight and clear space for continued progress.  I know it can be hard to let things go, so think about what new positive habits can replace the old ones.

Let’s not become a part of the majority.  Keep making room for you and your weight loss goals!
